Contact Lenses

Whether you've never worn lenses before, or perhaps tried a few years ago, wouldn't you like the chance to experience the freedom and comfort that modern contact lenses offer?

Why not ask to try a pair of the very latest lenses? We have many hundreds of happy lens wearers aged from under 8 to over 80, some of whom wear lenses full time and some just socially or for sports etc. Age is most definitely not a barrier. In fact we have fitted a significant number of younger wearers recently, many of these making the move up into High School. This is a major landmark in a young person's life, and the confidence boost that contact lenses have been proven to provide can only help.

We offer a free initial trial to anyone wishing to try contact lenses, so what have you got to lose, apart from maybe your glasses?

Soft Lenses

Soft Contact Lenses are very easy to adapt to and extremely comfortable to wear. Disposable lenses deal effectively with the problems of material wear and lens deposits, simply by disposing of the lenses on a planned regular basis. We supply daily, two weekly, monthly and three monthly options as well as durable lenses.

Spherical Daily Disposable lenses are available to suit around 75% of single vision prescriptions. If you are out of the range currently available, there may well be a daily disposable for astigmatism, or a monthly, two weekly or weekly lens to suit you. The cost of these lenses continues to fall as they gain popularity, and prices now start from well under £1.00 per day for full time users.

We were particularly pleased to be one of the first practices in the UK to have fitted Dailies Total 1. David attended the world launch of this product in Barcelona in February 2012 and we believe the innovative Water Gradient Technology helps make this the best new contact lens product in the last 20 years. If you'd like to find out if you're suitable, please get in touch with us. In 2016, the Multifocal version of Dailies Total 1 was launched and we are looking forward to using the Astigmatism version when that arrives.

Continuous Wear Lenses

Silicone-Hydrogel lenses offer unparalleled levels of safety for continuous wear of up to 30 days and nights. They won’t work well for everyone, but we can discuss your suitability after your examination.

Multifocal Lenses

If you need lenses to see well at a variety of distances, there are several recent developments in the Multifocal Contact Lens field that may help you. These are available as RGP (Rigid gas Permeable) lenses and soft lenses in Daily, Weekly, 2 Weekly and Monthly formats. Duette Multifocal is a Silicone-Hydrogel/RGP Multifocal hybrid lens which we are having great success with and we (and many clients) have been delighted with both the vision and comfort offered by Johnson & Johnson's new 1 Day Acuvue Moist Multifocal.

Coloured Soft Lenses

These are available in a disposable format or as a more durable lens. Alcon manufacture a huge range of coloured lenses, such as Freshlook and Air Optix Colors, but we also deal with other suppliers.

Soft Lenses For Astigmatism

If you have astigmatism there are a number of monthly soft toric lenses available, as well as daily & two weekly. Johnson & Johnson's One Day Acuvue Moist for Astigmatism, covers almost three times more prescriptions than the previous best lens and this has inspired other manufacturers to try and catch up so, if you've been told you're unsuitable before, things might have changed and you should talk to us.

There are several manufacturers that can provide us with custom soft toric lenses on a three or six monthly planned replacement scheme. Even Multifocals are now available in some designs.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Lenses

RGP lenses look very much like the original hard corneal lenses first fitted around sixty years ago, but that is where the similarities end. RGP materials allow oxygen to pass through the material to the cornea, and although soft lenses do this too, the best RGP lenses allow a greater flow of oxygen to the cornea than many soft lenses.

RGP lenses may give a better standard of vision than soft lenses if there is more than 0.50D of astigmatism in the prescription, and offer a less expensive alternative to soft torics, or may even attain a better standard of vision than soft torics.

Historically, there is a lower incidence of infection problems with RGP wearers compared to soft lens wearers, although these comparisons were made before the days of daily disposable soft lenses which have a fairly unblemished track record. RGP lenses are available in bifocal and multifocal forms, and as toric lenses if there are very large amounts of astigmatism.

Our main supplier of RGP lenses is No 7 Contact Lenses, but we also use Bausch & Lomb and David Thomas, amongst others. If you would like more information about contact lenses of any type, please talk to us. As independent opticians we have the freedom to offer the products which we feel will most benefit the individual patients we see.

Hybrid Lenses

We have fitted many pairs of hybrid lenses since the introduction of Duette. This innovative lens combines a Gas Permeable middle section with a Silicone-Hydrogel skirt, offering the best attributes of Rigid and Soft lenses, namely Vision and Comfort. Although this is an old idea, it wasn't until Duette was launched that the materials were able to offer the breathability that enables safer and more comfortable contact lens wear. We have this product available as a multifocal too.

We do not use "own-brand" products. Although they would perhaps increase our profitability, they would restrict choice, and we want to use what's right for you.

Keratoconus

We have an array of lenses for Keratoconus, including fitting sets for Rose K2, Dyna Intra-Limbal, Kerasoft, So2Clear and hybrid products. Synergeyes' Ultra Health hybrid lens is also now available, and we were one of the first practices in the UK to fit the new ICD 16.5 mini scleral lens when it was launched. David has over 30 years of experience and understands well the needs of clients with Keratoconus. We are pleased to see patients via the Hospital Eye Service, or privately. Please contact us for more information.

Orthokeratology

OrthoK is an amazing way of reshaping your cornea whilst you sleep, such that you'll be able to see well all day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. Sounds too good to be true? It's only suitable for a limited range of prescriptions, but if it could work for you, it's what you might call a Dream Lens (!). Please contact us for more information or visit www.orthoklenses.com. We offer a free initial consultation to discuss OrthoK suitability. We just require an up to date Spectacle Prescription.

Myopia Control / Myopia Management

There is a growing body of evidence (from researchers) and real examples (from our own case records) that shows that certain types of lenses can significantly slow down the rate of increase of Myopia that can take place as a child grows and develops, and Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) has been shown to be a most effective method of Myopia Management with lenses.

We have known for many years that short-sightedness in children under 10 is very likely to increase steadily as they grow through their teenage years but it was something that the child, their parents and their eyecare practitioner had no real choice but to simply accept. However, we now know that there is something that can be done to more effectively manage Myopia in many cases.

Other lenses that we use to effectively manage Myopia in children are Proclear or Biofinity Soft Multifocal lenses with the "distance" portion of the lens in the centre, surrounded by the "near" portion. These are a monthly replacement format, worn typically on a daily wear basis and removed at night, at which time they are cleaned and stored in a case, ready for use the next day.

In early March 2017, we were invited to be one of a very small number of practices in the UK with access to MiSight, a daily disposable soft lens with a dual focus design developed specifically by Coopervision for management of Myopia. Early indications from clinical trials suggest that this lens can reduce the rate of Myopic Progression by almost 60%. We are VERY excited to be able to offer such a groundbreaking product before it has even been launched in the UK. More information about MiSight is available here

If your child is short-sighted (please check with us if you're not sure), we really recommend that you talk to us about how we might be able to help. You might want to check out www.orthoklenses.com for more information too.
